The first type of dental crown would be the metal crowns. These are the first crowns created and use different metals including gold and palladium. What’s good about these metal crowns is that there is no need for a lot of the tooth structure to be removed, and that the metal crown doesn’t affect the other teeth surrounding it.Metal crowns are the most durable, as they are very durable and strong yet they are yielding, meaning that they won’t shatter if put under a lot of pressure, they will bend just enough. Among all the types of crowns, they last the longest. The only problem is that they are made of pure metal, meaning the color would have to be gold or silver. Although some people might like it, a lot of people don’t, which is why these types of crowns are best for molars and the back part of the mouth.
Porcelain fused to metal is the next type of crowns. As the name suggests, these crowns are made of tooth like pieces of porcelain which is fused to a metal base. This is the most popular as these really look like real teeth and are quite strong due to its metal base. These last really long and can be used for both front and back parts of the teeth. They are the best of both worlds, having porcelain to look like real teeth and having the strong metal base to help support the crown. The only problem with porcelain fused to metal is that the metal could oxidize and in time, leave a thin grey line on the gums. Although this could be changed and cleaned, it can serve as a problem for some people.
All resin types of dental crowns are crowns made purely of resin. This type isn’t every popular mainly because they are not as durable as the first two and they fracture easily. This type is best used on front teeth or the parts that don’t take too much pressure. The good thing about resin is that it can be colored to match the rest of your natural teeth.
Pure porcelain or pure ceramic types of dental crowns are also available. These are for patients with metal allergies or don’t want to take the risk of the metal oxidizing leaving a grey line on the gums. Although these look like real teeth, they aren’t as strong as the ones with metal, and can break and chip if not taken care of or if there is too much force used in chewing. These porcelain or ceramic crowns look like your natural teeth, and are best for the front teeth as long the patient does not do a lot of biting of hard foods. These crowns are not very ideal for the back part or for molars since they can’t take a lot of pressure and you don’t want to run the risk of breaking or dislodging them.
